Being a cockatoo enthusiast and pet owner, I’m going to answer a few questions my friends, neighbors, and people most often ask me. Galah cockatoos; Are they a Good pet? What makes them terrible pets? What is life like with a cockatoo?

Though it’s pretty complex to answer, Galah cockatoos are good pets and make a good bond with you. But they can be terrible when they get insufficient attention and engagement.

Whether you’re a newbie bird owner, an experienced one, or just surfing for information; this guide caters to you all.

Galah Cockatoos; Are they a Good Pet?

Galah cockatoos are recognized as the friendliest, pleasant, and good pet birds. They look the coolest that will steal your heart; they love mimicry, human interaction, and perching on the shoulder. Galah needs a lot of attention, and they’ve mood swings; if you can handle it, you’re going into a lifetime bond.

How are Cockatoos a Good Pet?

Their bold colors and friendly personalities have made Galah cockatoos increasingly popular as pets. Cockatoo looks like the most remarkable birds in the world, and if you ever met one personally, they will steal your heart. They’re pretty, intelligent, and mischievous.

Galah can learn to say many words and do complicated tricks with regular training. Cockatoos are fond of human interaction and often sighted near cultivated areas, ponds because they eat crops and pests; as a result, farmers regard this bird.

These rose-breasted cockatoos are very affectionate birds; they love to cuddle and be pet and kiss until you do it wrong. My galah pet is so loving every night; I tell him goodnight, kiss him, and he responds with a bit of tune and it’s the same sound every night, so I know that he’s also telling me goodnight.

They’re friendly, playful, and brilliant; they mimic your speeches, emit mesmerizing tunes while flying and screeching sounds upon being angry or frightened. Cockatoos are very quiet most of the day; it’s typical for them to be noisy two times out of the day, “morning and evening.”

Galah cockatoos love to be handled and enjoy engagement most of the time. They need pretty much attention; however, you regularly provide other things like toys, perches, human-grade foods, chewable, and cards; these will stimulate their moods and engage them.

Cockatoos eat seeds, salmon, formulated pellets, salads, and nuts.

If you can deal with all these, this bird is suitable for you and will be your lifelong companion.

What is life like with a cockatoo?

The first thing is that they hold grudges mostly because they are so intelligent. You could have a great day with your bird 28 days in a row. Then one day, you get called into work, have a very long day, and come home extremely tired. You don’t get to spend as much time with the bird as you want, and the bird you thought like was going to reciprocate your love and just be mad. They’ll grudge, galah could be holding a grudge tomorrow for what you did yesterday.

As I mentioned earlier, they’ve mood swings; once my galah was playing with cards and I touched it, he was fine, and a few minutes later, he got mad at me for it.

Someone I know who takes excellent care of his galah got a second cockatoo, and the first pulled out all of his feathers. It’s just something to be jealous of.

Sometimes when they’re entertaining, I find that they’re destroying something in the house. They scratch things, play with trays, hit the beak on plates, cut the cables and fly in the place.

These parrots need sound sleep in a dark, quiet place that mimics the safety of the roosting areas that they prefer when living in the wild.

They need a covered and peaceful nest box or cage to sleep that will mimics their native habitat.

Reasons Why Galahs aren’t For You?

  • These birds need a lot of attention, and they need to be led out of the cage for several hours every day. Cockatoos are also looking forward to seeing you most of the time.
  • Next is the emotions of a Galah. Cockatoo can be easily stressed; they could be hormonal, have mood swings, or be neglected; all these emotional distress will come out in physical harm to their bodies.
  • If they experience insufficient attention or hormonal changes, they bite and could do a much harder nasty bite, even pluck their feathers or fall into diseases.
  • They need a spacious cage and considerable maintenance in captivity.
  • They are messier like a cat, sometimes pooping everywhere and making intimate, loud sounds.
  • Cockatoos have a sensitive respiration system and shouldn’t be kept near scented candles, hair sprays, and cleaning detergents.

These are a few common factors, if you haven’t enough time to spend with a cockatoo every day, can’t tolerate their loud grudges, or cannot provide a spacious cage and play area, never adopt a cockatoo. It’s a huge commitment.
